A realistic timeline for starting laser before the big day, from a year out to the final weeks.
Somewhere between the venue tour and the tasting menu, a quieter question tends to surface: when should I start laser hair removal? The short answer is earlier than most people expect. Laser works through a series of sessions spaced weeks apart, so starting about 12 months before your wedding gives most people room for a full series and a calm buffer before the day itself.
Six months out, many people can still see noticeable progress. Three months out, you’re beginning rather than finishing, and that’s fine, as long as your plan reflects it.
Here’s a realistic guide to bridal laser hair removal: what it can and can’t do, how the timeline works, and how to plan sessions around bridal showers, spray tans, and a honeymoon in the sun.
First, something worth saying plainly: body hair has nothing to do with whether you’re ready to get married. Laser is an option, not a requirement, and plenty of brides skip it entirely.
For those who are curious, the appeal is usually practical. Most pre-wedding hair removal is about the next few days or weeks. Laser plays a longer game: it’s designed to reduce hair growth over time, which for many people means less frequent shaving, less razor irritation, and one less thing to maintain in an already full year.
Where brides tend to notice it:
Most wedding preparation beauty treatments happen in the final weeks: the facial, the brows, the nails, the spray tan. Laser works on a longer clock, and the reason is biology.
Laser targets the pigment in your hair; the light converts to heat, which damages the follicle. But hair grows in cycles: an active growth phase (anagen), a brief transition (catagen), and a resting phase (telogen). Follicles respond best during active growth, and at any given moment only some of your hairs are there.
That’s why one appointment can’t reach everything, and why sessions are spaced weeks apart: each visit catches a new group of follicles as they cycle into growth. Treated hairs also shed gradually over the days and weeks afterward, which can look like regrowth at first.
Progress also varies from person to person, for reasons we’ll get to below.
For planning purposes, face sessions are typically spaced about four to six weeks apart and body sessions four to eight. At that pace, a six-to-eight-session series on the underarms or legs can take roughly seven months to a little over a year.
12+ months before the wedding: the most breathing room. A year or more gives most people time for a full series on most areas, with room for travel, busy weeks, or a session you need to move. If legs are on your list, the earlier the better, since leg sessions are usually spaced furthest apart.
6–9 months before: a strong window. At typical spacing, that’s roughly four to seven sessions on the underarms or bikini line, a few fewer on the legs. Many people notice meaningful reduction in that stretch, though you may still be mid-series on the day.
3–6 months before: a real start. Expect around two to four sessions on most body areas. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says you can expect a 10% to 25% reduction in hair after the first treatment, so early sessions do count. Still, plan to shave for the wedding and keep going after the honeymoon.
1–2 months before: consult, test, and plan. There’s usually time for a consultation and one session, possibly two on the face. The goal isn’t transformation. It’s learning how your skin responds and starting a series you’ll continue after the wedding. Starting after the honeymoon is an equally good plan.
The final weeks: protect what you’ve started. Your last pre-wedding session needs a buffer: time for any redness to settle, for treated hairs to shed, and for your post-treatment sun window to pass before a spray tan or a sunny honeymoon. For most brides, that points to about three to four weeks out. After that, shave the way you normally would and wear your SPF.
There’s no universal number, and a responsible provider won’t promise one. Reputable sources describe ranges: Mayo Clinic says most people need four to eight treatments for best results, and the AAD notes that removing hair can take six sessions or more. At Seda Laser & Aesthetics, most clients complete their series in six to twelve visits. (Our complete guide to laser hair removal in Austin breaks down typical spacing by area.)
What shapes your number:
Think of the series as the main event and maintenance as the encore. Mayo Clinic notes that some people need follow-up treatments over time, and when hair does grow back, it’s often finer and lighter.
Laser hair removal for brides doesn’t come with a checklist. Choose based on what you’ll wear, where you’re traveling, and what you’re tired of maintaining.
Whatever you’re considering, suitability depends on your hair and skin. A professional assessment is where your provider confirms what’s likely to work for you and builds a plan around your date.
If your wedding is only weeks away, laser can still be part of the story, just not the whole story before the day itself. A full series takes months, so a late start is best treated as a beginning: you may see some early change, and you’ll likely still shave for the wedding.
A few guidelines for a calm run-up:

After each session
About 12 months, if you can. That usually leaves room for a full series plus a buffer before the day. Six to nine months is still a strong window; anything shorter is a good start you’ll likely continue after the honeymoon.
Yes. Expect roughly two or three sessions before the wedding, depending on the area. Many people notice some reduction by then, but plan to shave for the day itself and keep going afterward.
There’s no fixed number. Most people need a series (Mayo Clinic cites four to eight treatments for best results), and some need more, particularly on the face. Your provider can give you a personal estimate after assessing your hair and skin.
Yes. Shaving is the recommended way to manage hair during your series because it leaves the root in place. Avoid waxing, plucking, threading, and epilating, which remove the root the laser needs to find.
Laser can be used across a wide range of skin tones when the wavelength and settings are matched to the person. The Nd:YAG wavelength is generally preferred for deeper skin tones, while Alexandrite is typically used for lighter skin; Seda’s Candela GentleMax Pro Plus offers both. Hair color matters too, and an individual assessment determines what’s appropriate. More in our guide to laser hair removal for all skin tones.
Yes, with the sun in mind. Share your travel dates when you book so your final pre-trip session lands at least two weeks before you leave; treated skin needs that time out of direct sun. Then pack a mineral SPF.
Before: sun and self-tanner on the area, waxing or plucking, and active exfoliants. After: heat, heavy sweating, and swimming for a day or two, exfoliants for about a week, and direct sun for at least two weeks. Your provider’s instructions come first.
It’s best described as permanent hair reduction, the FDA’s term for a long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs that regrow after a course of treatment. Results often last months or years; some regrowth is common, often finer and lighter, and occasional maintenance keeps things on track.
