A month-by-month countdown for anyone with a date on the calendar.
The short answer: start nine to twelve months out, and don’t book a session in the final two weeks.
If you have less time than that, you can still get real results — you’ll just be planning around a shorter runway, and there are a couple of things worth not doing to compensate. Here’s the countdown, month by month.
A course of laser hair removal is a schedule rather than an appointment. Sessions are spaced four to six weeks apart for facial areas and four to eight for the body, because the laser only affects follicles in their active growth phase — and those rotate on their own timeline rather than yours.
So: six sessions at those intervals is roughly five to eight months of elapsed time. Eight sessions runs longer. Add a holiday, a work trip, one rescheduled appointment, and a bachelorette weekend, and you want buffer.
Nine to twelve months gives you the course plus room for real life. It also means your last session lands comfortably before the final month, which matters more than people expect. Here’s more on why session counts vary.
Book a consultation before purchasing a package. Session counts vary depending on the treatment area, hair color and coarseness, skin tone, and whether hair growth is hormonally driven.
This is also the time to decide what you’re actually treating. Underarms and bikini are the most common bridal areas, while legs, forearms, and back are common for grooms. Facial areas, including the upper lip, chin, and jawline, are worth flagging early, as facial hair typically requires more sessions and often involves ongoing maintenance rather than a finite course.
Get session one booked and build the rest of the schedule around your known dates. Look ahead at travel, the holidays, the bachelorette, and anything else already on the calendar, and place appointments deliberately rather than booking one at a time.
Two things to know now, so neither one rattles you later:
The first session won’t look like much. Expect somewhere around a 10% to 25% reduction after one treatment, and expect the treated hair to work its way out over the following one to three weeks — which looks exactly like regrowth. Read this before it happens, and you’ll skip a genuinely unnecessary week of worry.
No waxing from here on. Not before a session, not between sessions, not once before an engagement shoot. Waxing removes hair from the root, which is what the laser needs to find. Shave as often as you like — that’s completely fine at any point.
This is where the patchy phase happens: some areas clearing faster than others, regrowth arriving finer and slower. It reads as uneven treatment, but it’s just different follicles on different clocks.
Two Austin-specific notes. If you’re marrying in spring or fall, your mid-course months may run through summer, which means sun exposure needs planning — you want a clean two-week window before each session, and lake weekends make that harder. And if you’re doing engagement photos, aim for a week or two after a session rather than three days after.
Your final sessions should be landing here. If you started on time, you’re wrapping up your initial course with room to spare.
If you’re behind, this is the moment to be realistic rather than aggressive. Squeezing sessions closer together doesn’t speed anything up. If the follicles haven’t cycled into growth phase, there’s less for the session to work on. The interval is set by biology, not by your deadline.
Also worth planning now: any other skin treatments. Facials, peels, and new skincare all want their own space around laser sessions and around the wedding. Don’t stack a new retinoid, a first-time peel, and a laser session in the same fortnight.
If you want one final session, this is roughly the window. It gives the shedding phase time to finish and any redness or swelling plenty of time to resolve.
Don’t book a laser session in the last two weeks. Post-treatment redness and mild swelling typically resolve within one to three days, and most people are fine much sooner — but you don’t want to be the exception in your photos.
The same goes for anything new: no first-time facials, no new products, no new peels. The two weeks before a wedding are for things you’ve already done successfully at least twice.
Shaving is completely fine in this window, and it’s what most people do for any last-minute touch-up.
Sunscreen — especially in Austin, especially with outdoor events, and especially on any area you’ve been treating. Recently treated skin is more vulnerable to pigment changes, and this is not the week to discover that.
You can still do this. The move is to adjust expectations rather than compress the schedule.
Six months out: enough for a meaningful course on most body areas. You’ll likely see substantial reduction, though possibly not a complete course. Start now, keep the intervals honest, and accept that the last session or two may land after the wedding.
Three to four months out: enough for two or three sessions. That’s real, visible thinning — roughly 10% to 25% reduction per treatment — but not clearance. Worth doing if you plan to continue afterward anyway. Less worth it if you’re expecting it to be finished by the date.
Under two months: be honest with yourself. One or two sessions won’t transform an area, and the last one still needs to clear the two-week buffer. Start because you want to continue after the wedding, not because you expect a result by it.
Under a month: With wedding planning in full swing, this may not be the ideal time to begin your laser journey. Between appointments, events, and last-minute details, you’ll likely have plenty on your plate. For now, stick with your usual hair removal routine and plan to start laser after the wedding, when you can settle into a consistent treatment schedule.
The most asked and least discussed part of bridal prep, so let’s just cover it.
Same rules, with two additions. This area is often where reduction is most noticeable, so it rewards starting early. And it’s the area where the first session is most uncomfortable and the fourth is genuinely fine — here’s what that appointment actually involves, including the questions people feel awkward asking.
If a honeymoon follows, plan for that too. A beach honeymoon means sun exposure, so your next session should be scheduled with a clean window afterward rather than three days after you land.
Not on a wedding timeline but thinking about starting? Here’s why fall is the sensible season to begin in Austin.
If you have a date, bring it to a consultation and we’ll work backward from it — including telling you honestly if there isn’t enough time to get where you want to be. Consultations are $35 virtual or $50 in person and credit toward your first appointment.
Or explore treatment areas first. And if you’re still gathering information, that’s exactly what this guide is for.
